AI-powered research platforms are designed to streamline (and ideally, improve) the research process. These platforms use advanced AI algorithms to help users discover, analyze, and organize academic papers and other scholarly content. They offer features like semantic search, paper recommendations, visualization of research trends, and automated summaries, making it easier to find relevant information, identify connections between works, and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field. These tools aim to improve the efficiency and depth of academic research by leveraging AI to manage and interpret vast amounts of data.
While using these platforms can be helpful, over-reliance can pose several problems, including the propagation of biases and inaccuracies, a reduction in critical thinking skills, and the potential overlooking of important works. These platforms may also pose data privacy and security risks and have limited capability in understanding complex content. Additionally, they may limit exposure to diverse perspectives and increase the risk of plagiarism if not used responsibly. While these tools offer valuable assistance, faculty should balance their use with traditional research methods and their own expertise.
The SFCC Library has a robust collection of research databases, providing access to a variety of research that many of these AI-powered platforms cannot. Responsible use of AI-powered platforms includes using these platforms as an additional research tool and aid - not as a replacement. The librarians realize our resources may not always be able to fulfill the research needs of our dedicated faculty and staff, but we are always happy to not only provide research assistance but connect our community with high-quality sources through Interlibrary Loan. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.
