Faculty Help: Linking/Embedding Library Resources: Embedded Librarians

Help for embedding permalinks and video content into your Canvas course shells.

Embedded Librarians in Your Course Shell

What are embedded Librarians?
This is when a librarian is placed in and assigned a role (ie. "Librarian" or "TA," etc.) within your Canvas course shell.

Advantages - What We Can Do
Having an embedded librarian can provide your students with additional, convenient access to research assistance. While it cannot replace in-person, face-to-face interaction, it can provide, to the greatest degree possible, a robust, parallel experience for students. Librarians can be as active and involved to the extent that you would like. Think of it as having a 'research coach' right there in your course shell!

Participate in Discussions
Are you having students discuss their research topics? Sources they've found? Citation issues? Challenges and success they've had with the research process? These are all things we can help with!

Helpful Resources
Whether it's a direct link to an article or database, a helpful video or a credible source on the web, an embedded librarian can 'drop in' content that can benefit your students. One less thing for you to worry about!

Be Within Easy Reach of Students
Even though our contact information is on the library's website, it can still be confusing for students to know exactly how to reach out to a librarian. When we are embedded into your course, we are just a click away. Like you, or any other student in the class, the embedded librarian can be reached by a message sent through the Canvas Inbox.

How To Set It Up
Either you or the librarian can submit a work ticket to OTL (Online Teaching & Learning):

  1. Log into Canvas
  2. Click Help (lower left)
  3. Select Instructor Request
  4. Be sure to include course name and # (CRN) and the name of the librarian you'd like embedded. (Will probably be either Sarah Hood or Laura Smith)
