Display Policy

Library Displays

The SFCC Library Display Policy provides guidelines for creating and managing library displays to ensure they align with the SFCC library’s mission to promote library collections, intellectual freedom, diversity, and educational growth. Displays are intended to foster critical thinking, celebrate diversity, and support the academic and cultural goals of the SFCC community.

This policy applies to all library displays created by library staff or student workers. It also covers collaborative displays developed with campus departments and student organizations.

  1. Commitment to Intellectual Freedom:
Library displays reflect the principles of intellectual freedom as outlined in the SFCC Academic Freedom Policy and the Library Collection Development Policy. Displays are intended to present diverse perspectives and encourage exploration of ideas.
  2. Diversity and Inclusion:
Displays will strive to represent a broad range of ideas, cultures, and viewpoints, ensuring inclusivity and relevance to the SFCC community.
  3. Goals:
Displays will support the library’s role in promoting the library’s collection and advancing learning, personal growth, and cultural enrichment.
  4. Creating of Displays:
Library staff have the freedom to design displays within the framework of this policy. The selection of themes, materials, and topics is guided by professional judgment, diversity and inclusion, the SFCC curriculum, seasonal recognitions, institutional priorities, and current events.
  5. Collaboration Opportunities:
The library welcomes collaborative displays with other departments and student organizations.  SFCC staff, faculty, and/or students wishing to create a display must submit a proposal outlining the theme, purpose, and materials to the Library Director.
  6. Content Standards:
Displays should adhere to professional standards of accuracy, appropriateness, and relevance.

Challenged Displays
An SFCC student, staff, or faculty member wishing to share concerns or feedback about a display may do so by scheduling a meeting with the SFCC Library Director.  Based on that meeting, an SFCC community member may be given a reconsideration form to lodge a formal complaint.  A committee will be formed to review the reconsideration request.  The committee will review the request and the display to ensure that it meets the criteria for display as outlined in the SFCC Library Displays Policy.  The SFCC community members will be informed in writing by the Library Director about any decision and any actions taken.
